Logik IR100 with internal wireless dongle modification

Warning: Any modifications you make to your Logik IR100 are at your own risk. 

This page shows my experiment to evaluate whether or not just repositioning the wireless USB dongle to a different position within the case would lead to any improvement in wireless sensitivity.  This modification can easily be removed if you need to return your IR100 for warranty purposes. I should point out I have not moved the mains transformer to cure the mains hum problem.

Materials required:

 

Note: The rear grey plastic panel is recessed into the case and is a very tight fit.  Take extreme care when trying to remove the rear panel. There is a good chance you may also end up lifting the black plastic strip which is stuck onto the rear edge of the case as you try to prise the rear panel clear of the case.

 

The connectors on the end of USB extension cords come in various shapes and sizes.  The female end of my 40cm long cable is about 50mm long as you can see from the photo below.

 

 

In the best 'Blue Peter' tradition, I cut my piece of cardboard into this shape below.  It will become evident later why there is a 65mm tab to my design.

 

The idea is to fold the cardboard into the shape below so that it slides tightly over the protruding fixing legs as shown in the two photos below.  If you use staples, make sure to wrap a few layers of sticky tape around the exposed staple as a precaution against shorting out anything on the USB wireless dongle.

 

Now you can see from the next photo, the purpose of the 65mm wide tab.  It is to stop the formed cardboard sliding too far back when you later attempt to refit the rear panel.  

 

This photo shows how I routed my 40cm long USB extension cable.  Take care the cable doesn't apply any undue pressure to the side of the eletrolytic capacitor. (small black cylindrical thing).   You can see I simply wedged the female end of the USB extension cable down the left hand gap between the end of the main circuit board and the side of the case.

 

The female end of the USB extension lead is about 50mm in length. This plus the length of the wireless dongle allows the assembly to rest at an angle.  Any shorter and the assembly could end up near horizontal with the risk that you could crush and damage the wireless dongle when refitting the rear panel.

On reflection, I suppose I could have just used double sided foam sticky pads to fix the wireless dongle to the interior side of the case, eliminating the need for the formed cardboard carrier, but I was a bit concerned the dongle may have come unstuck with time.  I may still assess this sticky pad option later.

 

 

Finally, did it make a difference?

I also compared the results against having the wireless USB dongle positioned outside of the case.

Factory positioned wireless dongle:        Sees and connects only to my own wireless network just fine.

New internal dongle position:                 Can see some of my neighbours' wireless networks and can even connect to one which has no security.

External dongle position:                        Consistently sees all of my neighbours' wireless networks when I scan for networks.
